Baroque Splendour in the Hills.

In 1693 a devastating earthquake laid waste to the picturesque hilltop towns of Southern Sicily. They were reconstructed by the  finest  architects that Italy had to offer,  endowing the area with supreme examples of late Baroque architecture in Italy and producing in Noto what some regard as Italy’s  most beautiful street. In our tour we will explore the notable examples  of this late flowering of    Italian Baroque.

The tour will be based in Ragusa, from where there will be excursions through the rugged limestone terrain to Syracuse,  Modica ,Noto, and Scicli -the first three enjoying ,with Ragusa, UNESCO world heritage status.We will also visit  some renowned classical sites: the late Roman mosaics at the Villa Romana del Tellaro just outside Noto, and  also the famous archaeological park at Syracuse with its temples, amphitheatre, and sacred sites.  Scattered throughout the area are shooting locations used in the  Montalbano television series.

Cost will include four nights bed and breakfast, coach excursions to Syracuse,  Noto, Modica, Scicli, the services of experienced local guides, and transfers to and from Catania airport.
